Laparoscopic Anatomy & Pelvic Demonstration (Lap-Demo) Workshop

Course Description

The AGES Laparoscopic Pelvic Anatomy Demonstration Workshop is suitable for all levels of RANZCOG trainees and specialists.

It is a single-day, intensive pelvic anatomy primer for those wishing to expand their knowledge of what lies beneath the pelvic and abdominal peritoneum.

AGES aims to allow access to quality anatomy teaching by providing courses focusing on a functional laparoscopic approach to pelvic anatomy. The demonstration course allows registrants from around Australia and New Zealand to participate in lectures, watch live anatomical surgery and interact with highly skilled laparoscopic surgeons as they delve into the anatomical aspects of the female pelvis.

The dissection is performed and broadcast live on female fresh frozen donors at the Medical Engineering and Research Facility (MERF), Queensland University of Technology (QUT) facility in Brisbane.

Highly interactive presentations are followed by relevant focussed dissections.

These are performed on six compartments of the pelvis and abdomen.

All participants will receive pre-reading and copies of the presentations a week before the workshop.

Registrants can expect to increase their anatomical knowledge and awareness allowing for improved surgical confidence and outcomes and reduced complications for their patients. The workshop will cover the anatomical knowledge required by trainees to sit the RANZCOG written and oral examinations.

Lap-Demo Course Objectives

To understand, and observe laparoscopic dissection of the female pelvis in relation to the

  1. Abdominal wall, and pelvic surface anatomy
  2. Pelvic bony anatomy, neurovascular relations, muscles, ligaments
  3. Pelvic viscera, bladder, uterus, ovaries and the rectum
  4. Midline and lateral avascular spaces, and the pelvic sidewall
  5. Surgical layers of the pelvic sidewall (ureter, vessels and nerves)
  6. Anatomy of pelvic floor (muscle, nerves, vessels, relation for prolapse surgery)
  7. Anatomical distribution of pelvic nerves including somatic and autonomic system
  8. Understanding of nerve sparing procedures in endometriosis and other gynaecological anatomical procedures, with a retro peritoneal approach for dissection
  9. Upper abdomen anatomy (sigmoid, caecum, small bowel, diaphragm, para-aortic lymph nodes, mesentery, omentum, ureteric relations)

Lap-Demo Learning Outcomes

  1. Enhance knowledge of the anatomy of the female pelvis in relation to laparoscopic surgery with an emphasis on pelvic avascular spaces, pelvic nerve identification, and sparing
  2. Develop an understanding of laparoscopic dissection techniques with an emphasis on ureterolysis and access to the avascular spaces and planes
  3. Appreciate that the acquisition of anatomical knowledge and dissection techniques improves surgical procedures and is a career-long process
