Medical Engineering and Research Facility (MERF)

About

The Medical Engineering Research Facility (MERF) supports medical devices research and development cycle in a state-of-the-art QUT facility. MERF enable cutting-edge research at QUT, and also support health research advances at the Prince Charles Hospital.

MERF has capabilities for preclinical studies, including post-explantation evaluation, and facilities for hands-on skills training for surgeons, theatre staff, and sales personnel.

Backed by rigorous academic research from the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, MERF provide preclinical research models in small and large animals for the assessment of new biomaterials, medical devices, implants, and surgical techniques. MERF has a strong focus on applications in orthopaedics, but our capabilities extend to all clinical fields.

MERF provide a responsive service in a GLP-accredited environment, with well-established animal and cadaver research, and training models. Their dedicated team comprises international experts and includes surgeons, veterinary scientists, and quality assurance personnel.

History

The facility was officially opened in 2008 at The Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside. The Queensland Government Smart State Facilities Fund provided $5 million to build the facility and QUT contributed $4.15 million for completion and fit-out, with additional funding and equipment support from industry partners Medtronic and Stryker.

The Prince Charles Hospital continues to support MERF through the provision of land, equipment, and staff funding.
